What is Card Counting?
Card counting is a strategy that allows blackjack players to know when they have the advantage. When this advantage occurs, players will increase their bets. When the advantage shifts in the dealers favor, the player will make a smaller bet or not play hands at all. Counters can gain a good advantage over the dealer by varying bets in size based of the count.
Basic Counting Strategy
If the cards dealt are: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 = +1 to the count.
Cards: 7, 8, 9 = 0 or no change to the count.
Cards 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace = -1 to the count. As the count goes up it indicates that more low cards, which are bad for the counter have been discarded from the remaining deck. When this happens there is a greater number of high cards remaining which are good for the player.
True Count and Bet Size
The true count is the running count divided by the number of remaining decks in the game rounded the nearest half deck. The player then adjust the number of betting units (average dollar amount bet per hand) he/she is playing per hand to gain the advantage. This is the most accurate and widley used way to count cards.
